Devin and the Little Angels

I Feel...Therefore I Drink

Devin and the Little Angels are amazingly energetic and talented. They are a retro-sounding punk band. Watching them in action at the Mercury Lounge on February 2, I felt as if I had been transported to CBGB in 1977. Their music is in the spirit of early American punk rock, along the same lines as the Dead Boys, the Heartbreakers, the Stooges, the Ramones, and the Dictators. The sound of lead singer Devin Therriault's nasal voice over melodic tunes is reminiscent of Richard Hell. They also have an incredible stage presence, creating a wall of sound that makes it seem as if there were two guitarists instead of only one. From sappy, romantic, doo-wop- influenced songs such as “I Died in Your Arms” to the speedy number "You’re Mine," their music is genuine rock and roll. They are unlike most other acts that I have heard recently, aside from perhaps the White Stripes.

Hopefully Devin and the Little Angels are a sign of things to come for music in the next decade as the record industry continues to implode. Their next show is at Shea Stadium (20 Meadow St., Brooklyn) on February 27. Highly recommended for those who want to witness a glimmer of hope that punk isn’t dead.
