Finding the Perfect Fit

Some fashion trends are impossible for me to pull off. I cannot make bowling shoes, zebra prints or head wraps look good. But I can wear some of the more unique items I find at shops (wool men's trousers, a yellow blazer printed with black poodles), because I pick clothes that fit me well. Fit is key. The way your clothes hang on your body is essential to whether or not you can pull it off. Making sure your clothes fit your body type not only gives you license to indulge in some of fashion's more off-beat pieces, but is also an immediate sign of a person with style, not just a casual trend follower.

Take a look at yourself in the mirror, preferably naked. Stand there long enough to get comfortable with what you're looking at. You're stuck with it, so learn to love it. Wide hips are sexy don't try to squeeze them into too-tight pants or swallow them up in over-sized jeans. Find a pair that hugs and flatters your curves, with no extra material at the crotch. Elongate a bigger bust with a v-neck or scoop neck t-shirt; a bigger chest stuffed inside a spaghetti strap tank top makes your body look like a box.
It’s easy to look messy if your clothes don't fit. Pick pieces that conform to your body type instead of the one you wish you had. Then, use those pieces to create the illusion of your ideal figure. Women with short legs or torsos can wear long, loose tank tops to lengthen their waist, or high-waisted shorts and trousers to create the illusion of longer legs. Draped tops that hang over the top of your chest create the look of a more substantial bust. If you want to give your body a bit more curve, belt a loose dress or pencil skirt at the waist; too-tight dresses leave little to the imagination. In choosing these specific styles of clothing, you can create a fit for your clothes that you know will make your body look good.

When I'm thinking about fit, I consider my most flattering assets and highlight them. Instead of buying clothes for a woman with your ideal body type, embrace your body. Stick to styles that fit you and work with them to create your ideal look. Being confident and aware of your body type makes pulling it off a mere matter of fit.
